Security Analysis by Benjamin Graham and Dodd - Notes ebook pdf

Security Analysis, the revolutionary book on fundamental analysis and investing, was first published in 1934, following unprecedented losses on Wall Street.

Benjamin Graham and David Dodd chided Wall Street for its myopic focus on a company's reported earnings per share (eps), and were particularly harsh on the favored "earnings trends." They encouraged investors to take an entirely different approach by estimating the rough value of the operating business that lay behind the security. They have given actual examples of the market's tendency to irrationally under-value certain out-of-favor stocks.

The book is must read for any Stock Market Investor, fundamental analyst or equity research professional.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala Portfolio 2012

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, the billionaire investor, is no longer a dollar billionaire at least at the start of 2012, partly because of steep fall in the prices of his shares and partly due to rupee depreciation.

His portfolio has taken a serious beating in 2011, specially in the month of December when some of his favourite stock are down somewhere between 20 to 35 percent.

VIP Industries, a big chunk of his portfolio is down around 35% in december alone. Other losers include Provogue India, Subex, Reliance broadcast Network, Aptech and Delta Corp, all of which are down 20-25%. As per the insider news, the investor has been selling his positions recently to cover for losses from loss-making silver trades. However when asked about this, Jhunjhunwala termed those rumors baseless.

Opportunity to make 2.5% in 5 days

Considering the recent development in IT sector and the technical setup of IT stocks, there is a good opportunity to make 2.5 percent return in next 5 days using the following trade:

Trade: Sell TCS Dec 1200 call at 5.00 premium
Lot Size of TCS: 250
Total premium collection: 250 * 5.00 = Rs. 1250
Brokerage and other costs: Rs. 60
Net Earning = Rs. 1190
Margin required (in cash or stocks) for 1 lot= Rs. 42,000
Total return: 1190/42000 * 100 = 2.83%
Risk: The trade will result in loss beyond 1205. For every rupee rise above this level there will be a loss of Rs. 250 on each lot.

Justification of the trade:
1. The recent development on anti outsourcing of call centre jobs from US will continue to put pressure on Technology stocks. Overseas the share of Cognizant, Accenture and others have corrected 5% or more in one trading session.

Impact of Interest Rate on GDP

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has hiked repo rates by 375 bps since March, 2010 to curb inflation primarily by reducing demand in the system. Consequently inflation has got moderated, but such a massive increase in rates over short span of time has affected the economic growth significantly.

There is an interesting co-relation between GDP growth and repo rate hikes. Repo is the rate at which banks borrow from the RBI to meet their liquidity requirement. Currently, it is at 8.25%.

GDP growth is inversely proportional to repo rates, as can be seen from the chart below. When we compare the repo rate with the GDP growth in the period between Q4FY10 and Q2FY12, whenever there was a policy rate hike, GDP growth dropped.

Indian Rupee hits all time low against US dollar: Indian Stock Market crash possible

The Indian rupee (INR) today hit its lifetime low of 52.84/85 against the dollar (USD) as demand for the US currency soared amid signs of FIIs pulling out money in the wake negative growth in industrial production in October. In the forex market, the rupee opened lower at 52.09/10 a dollar and dropped further to finish at all-time record low at 52.84/85, down 81 paise, or 1.56% from its previous close.

In the article dated 9th Sep 2011 titled 5 year USD INR Chart, InvestorZclub predicted that the rupee would continue to stay weak due to unfavourable factors, which were clearly visible in the chart.

The currency fall is not at all good for our economy and stock markets and might lead to derating of the premium valuation multiple that we have been enjoying since past few years due to consistent 8% plus GDP growth. But now as growth is expected to slow down significantly in FY 13 it is almost certain that we no longer deserve premium valuation and should trade at multiples similar to our asian peers.

FDI in Retail put on hold: Sell Pantaloon Retail, CESC

We have demonstrated yet another example of how India inspite of tremendous potential could not outpace china because of the way things are done here.

After days of negotiating with opposition and allies over the issue of allowing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail, the government today put the controversial issue on hold. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banarjee, whose party Trinamool Congress is strongly opposed to the decision, made an announcement in Kolkata that Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee spoke to her and told her that the FDI decision has been "suspended".

Indian economy grew by just 6.9% in the second quarter of the 2011-12 financial year, breaking below the 7% mark. Q1 GDP was at 7.7%.

The government has projected overall economic growth in the current fiscal at around 8.5%, while the Reserve Bank has projected the growth to moderate to 8% from 8.5% in FY'11. But the current quarter GDP suggest that we might not be able to achieve even 7% GDP in current financial year.

Manufacturing sector grew by 2.7% while Construction sector grew by 4.3% vs 6.7% (y-o-y). Mining went down by -2.9%.

Trading Strategy of the Month: Sell Bharti Airtel 440 Call of December Expiry

For InvestorZclub readers, this month's trading idea is a little bit conservative due to the fact that the markets across the globe are very volatile and uncertain. We have had significant correction in Indian markets in very short span of time and trading on Nifty seems to be a bit challenging at the start of this December series. Hence InvestorZclub is recommending a strategy on individual stock rather than NIFTY which seems to be quite certain and safe.
Traders can consider selling 440 Call of Bharti Airtel december 2011 series at the current market premium of Rs. 1.00.

The logic behind this strategy is:

Italian bond yield chart: Hits all time high of 7%

Yields on 10-year Italian bonds rose to 7.4% on Wednesday (9th Nov 2011), as investors lost faith in the world's third-biggest sovereign-bond market. This is the highest ever yield seen on Italy's bonds.

The surge in yields came after clearing house LCH.Clearnet raised margin calls on Italian bonds, making them more expensive to trade. Portugal and Ireland were forced to seek financial bailouts after their bond yields exceeded 7%, a level many market analysts consider unsustainable.

The instability of Italy's political situation could increase the yields close to double digits in coming weeks. At 7% or 8% Italy could find it difficult to raise sufficient money on the bond market, and hence might require massive International financial assistance.

Moody Downgrades Indian Banking System

Moody’s Corporation, the global ratings firm,  has downgraded the outlook of the Indian banking system to "negative" from "stable" because of deteriorating asset quality and inadequate capitalisation, specially for the public sector banks.

Moody’s Vice-President and Senior Analyst Vineet Gupta said. that due to deteriorating asset quality, banks will need to increase provisioning significantly in FY2012 and FY2013.

On the positive side, however, the rating firm has recognised that India banks’ stable customer deposit base and their high level of government securities holdings provides them with a "resilient funding and liquidity profile" that buffers them against destabilising shocks.

TCS wins $2.2 billion BPO deal from Friends Life

The Magic Multiple

Benjamin Graham spent decades analysing thousands of companies and documented the values investing framework. He introduced a new multiple at a later stage to make life easy for investors who want to pick potential winners from a large number of stocks. He gave the following formula to calculate this magic multiple:

Magic Multiple = Price Earning Ratio (PE) * Price to Book Ratio (PBV)

This multiple helps avoid confusion when one ratio indicates that a stock is cheap while the other shows that it is costly.

Corporate Fixed Deposits: Things to know before investing

Company deposits or popularly known as Corporate FDs are the debt instruments offered by companies to public. These deposits are similar to bank fixed deposits but usually carry higher than bank's average fixed deposit rates and thus attract lot of investors. But it should be remembered that just assurance of a fixed return doesen't make company FDs risk free.

If the company is financially weak, they may not even be able to pay interest, at times, even the principal amount. In the 1990s, many investors lost their hard-earned savings because they were lured by high returns and didn't try to understand how the company would generate the money to repay the deposits.

So what is the risk of default?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ebook pdf

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is by far the most important learning for any webmaster, as the success of your blog or website is dependent on the fact that if your web asset is not visible in search then there is very high chance that it will not succeed.

I started this Stock Market blog in 2010 and have been learning SEO, since then, to optimize my blog for search engines. After implementing various techniques (as outlined in the SEO ebook) in the past 1 year my blog traffic has increased by 4000% in last 6 months. More than 90% of my blog's traffic comes from Google, Bing and Yahoo. Rest of the traffic comes from subscribers and referrals.

Experts suggest that SEO is a continuous process and cannot be done in a day. It should be practiced with patience and the result of the optimization is not visible immediately. Search Engines take time to notice the optimization and adjust the ranking of the website or blog in search results.

Following ebook on SEO by google is by far the best SEO tutorial for beginners and advanced users who want to understand the working of search engines and optimize their web asset for Google, Bing , Yahoo and other search engines.

NIFTY Trading Strategy: November 2011

Option Traders can Sell November contract of NIFTY 5700 Call at the current market premium of Rs. 13.

Considering the fact that NIFTY has had very sharp runup of more than 12% in a very short span of time it is highly unlikely that the index will jump another 6% in a month without spending time in consolidation. Also 5650 would be a significant resistance for the index considering the fact that the index has been making lower tops and lower bottom since 5th November 2010 and 5650 was the recent top made by the index (see the nifty ladder analysis here).
